About the artist

Stephanie Bloom was born and bred in East Anglia to a farming family. She started riding at her local riding school and the bug bit early – she has ridden ever since and owned her own horse for 10 years. She showed a keen interest in drawing her favourite riding school ponies as a child, but it is only as an adult that she started drawing portraits as a thank-you to owners of horses she had ridden.

After a career in recruitment she looked for a change of pace, moving back to East Anglia. After a short course in pastels at Watershed Studios in Essex she has been taking commissions for equestrian portraits.

She feels that she brings an exceptional ability to capture a likeness of each and every horse she draws – and although clients can choose between a more detailed, realistic style and a more dramatic almost impressionistic style, the identity of the individual horse and its personality is always clear.

Photographs

As I draw from photographs the quality is crucial:

Moderate lighting from behind the camera – a bright but cloudy day is ideal. A good close up preferably with a zoom lens reduces distortion, where the nose can end up looking huge and the ears tiny! And good detail – a camera on a phone is unlikely to give enough detail.

If you think you have the right picture do feel free to email it to me to see whether it will be suitable.
